Zanshin Martial Arts aims to help students develop a range of skills to improve themselves both physically and mentally. A fun, safe environment in which to learn the basic techniques of martial arts in an enjoyable way.
Kids learn confidence, not just the confidence to perform great martial arts techniques, but confidence in themselves to achieve in their daily life. They learn self discipline and to exercise control over themselves, which helps in all aspects of their lives, things like extra diligence in school work, or a greater willingness to help around the house.
Your kids can wear some comfortable clothes, shorts or track pants and a t-shirt. It's also a good idea to bring a drink bottle with water. Just let the instructor know it's your first class and they will give you an information brochure and answer any further questions you might have.
When you first start you'll get a Beginner Training Card for your family which lists all your names and keeps track of how many lessons you've had.
You don't need to sign up for membership on the first night, give them a couple of casual classes at our low nightly fee. You will soon know if they like it and want to continue.

Many believe that the goal of martial arts is to achieve black belt. Black belt grade is only the beginning of a deeper understanding of martial arts. So while we train you to become black belts, at the same time we offer training beyond that to allow you to develop yourself even further.
Our Ai Ki classes incorporate aikido grappling, arm locks and weapons training as a tool for understanding the movements of the body. This gives you a range of skills for close combat, and a better ability to blend with your training partner for the purpose of redirecting and using their movement against them. This is particularly good for not relying only on strength and power as the basis of defence.
You will need a weapons kit with a bokken, jo and tanto for training. Ai Ki class fees are separate from normal training fees, and you provide the nightly fee in an envelope with your name and date at the start of each lesson you attend.
Ai Ki classes are more formal than normal classes out of respect for the higher grade of the students in the class. You will find it very different at first, there is a lot of extra etiquette and all of the techniques are in Japanese. You will even have to tie your belt differently. Instructors will help explain everything you need to know so you can quickly fit into the class.
Gradings are an opportunity for students to progress to the next level in their training. Students start out at White Belt and continue through the ranks as they learn the techniques required to progress. Gradings are a great goal for students to work towards. Regular gradings give a sense of accomplishment and helps them see how far they have come in their training. They are an opportunity to show the very best they have learnt in their training, and to feel proud of what they have achieved. We encourage all students to grade when they feel ready. It's their own individual journey and we are happy for them to do it in their own time.
Grading forms are due 8 days before the grading. Black belt applicant forms are due 30 days before the date of the grading. For locations and times click on the Conder or Franklin buttons.
