ZANSHIN MARTIAL ARTS - BELTS AND STRIPES

Attaching Stripes

Zanshin grades increment by stripes - 1 per senior rank, 2 per junior rank. The stripe represents progression towards mastery of the curriculum and expectations of that belt rank.

Juniors should attach a stripe to each end of their belt (Not both on one end!). Senior stripes go on the left hand side of the belt (When tied correctly).

When achieving a new grade, if a stripe is awarded then it should be attached to the belt as soon as possible.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Remove the manufacturer label - you should be able to carefully cut/unpick the thread holding this on.
  2. Stripe Eligibility by Grade:
    • Junior Grades - May have no stripes, one stripe, or two stripes at both ends of their belt.
    • Senior Grades - May have no stripes or one stripe on only one end of the belt.
  3. Stripe Placement Guide. Refer to the diagram below for stripe positioning:
    • First stripe - Leave a gap of one belt width from the end of the belt before placing the first stripe.
    • Second stripe - Leave a gap of one stripe width from the first stripe before placing the second stripe.
  4. Stripes can be attached using either fabric glue or sewn on (or both!). A small hem will stop the stripe from unravelling.
